Wash, rinse, repeat.

As Bilbao cleans up after Aste Nagusia 06 I have finally found time to sort out this series of photographs which will undoubtedly amuse some of you... Well, I thought it was funny! This is a series of shots recording the aftermath of being battered (covered in a mixture of eggs, flour and water) on the first night of Aste Nagusia.

Ever the perfectionist, trying to get the composition just right.

My trusty Domke F2 bag covered in flour.

Back in my room it´s bath time for my cameras!

Well where else was I going to put them to drip dry?

img_0673.jpg

I forgot the girlie candles and silly smellies but the bag didn´t mind.

Then hang out of the window to dry! Good as new! (Well, almost...)

Battered (but not bruised or deep fried thankfully)

As I sit here I can feel the concussions from the first fireworks display of Aste Nagusia 06 bouncing off the back of the flats opposite and then around my room. An exceptionally good day.

Firstly I spent a few hours with Vespa Chica (Amaia), the only woman who I trust with my cameras. Good job as she seems to have taken a liking to them. After an impromptu foto clase in Arriaga we went for a drink where Amaia asked me (told me?) to take her photo then told me to take it again and again until it was perfect. Result below. Vale Vespa Chica?

 _u2d5914.jpg

¿Muy Guapa, no?

Amaia had bought herself a couple of photo books and also bought me dinner! Chicken and rice which I ate later and it was very good! ¡Muchas gracias!

Then it was on to the start of Aste Nagusia which I am too tired to describe as I have just spent half an hour washing a mixture of eggs, flour and water off my cameras, camera bag and jacket. Cant be bothered with washing it off my jeans, t-shirt, shoes or, er, me. The photos below tell their own story...

Note person in background taking photograph. That happened a lot.

Once you are properly battered you find it easier to get accepted by people.

But believe me, you should have seen the others. Manaña maybe.

As I have not had any "Can you come and pick me up?" calls from the airport I will assume that this evening you have probably gone down the pub, watched the TV or curled up on the couch with a DVD.

WELL DON´T SAY I DIDN´T INVITE YOU! :)

PS Not sure if I can survive another eight days of this... but I will try.

Aste Nagusia - preparations

The centre of town is rapidly being transformed for Aste Nagusia 2006. Unless you are really sensible and get on a plane for Bilbao to arrive on Saturday here is the nearest you will get to the real thing... Will update over the next 10 days, lack of sleep allowing.

 mb300-055.jpg

Get rid of the bus stops...

mb300-059.jpg

"Hmm... not sure if this sign is big enough."

mb300-065.jpg

Get a few hundred more wheelie bins...

mb300-077.jpg

Might as well get rid of the taxi signs too...

mb300-078.jpg

Give the drains a good flushing...

mb300-083.jpg

Make sure everyone knows which stand is which...

mb300-096.jpg

"Whaddyamean this should be a U?"

mb300-106.jpg

Stock up on some beers...

mb300-108.jpg

Finish building the stands...

 mb300-111.jpg

Yes, they finished the new muelle in time! Just...

mb300-113.jpg

Yes, this is a wine lorry pumping red wine into the bars...
(Probably last about four hours)

mb300-128.jpg

Last but not least tighten up that last bolt...

Día del pijama, Gexto

pijamas.jpg

Back to Algorta again for another fiesta,  Día del pijama. Everyone dresses up in their jim jams! Have no idea why but there again, why not?

The weather was a bit miserable to be honest but not as miserable as me when I looked across the bay and saw the Pride of Bilbao in dock. I don´t know what I will be doing four weeks today but I do know it will have to be something pretty special for me to want to be wherever I am instead of here.

I had a nice chat with the woman who runs the funicular railway and the security guard there and thought how rare this would be in UK, just have a nice friendly conversation with people you don´t know. Especially people who are in charge of something. Maybe the British have just given up trying?

I will be going back to Algorta before I get on the boat as it is a lovely place and, yes OK, it is high on my list of possible places to live. I just want to have a wander round and take it all in.

The local council of Getxo have installed a webcam which shows you the beach at Gorliz so I can always check on the weather. How thoughtful. Probably other people may use it too.  To be honest it´s not the best view of the beach, that is from the hill up above Puerto Viejo where the funicular is.

Sokamuturra para cuadrillas

mb290-0188.jpg

This looks worse than it was. I think.

mb290-0685.jpg

"And I only put this t-shirt on clean this morning..."

mb290-0400.jpg

Now this would be a really bad situation if the pole was greased. Unfortunately it is. That´s the whole point. It´s Sokamuturra para cuadrillas! Vertical greasy pole climbing! With bulls!

A team of Basques have to stand on each others shoulders to get the last person to the top of the pole. Two problems. First the pole is greased. Second the bull.

Two team members divert the attention of the bull away from the people standing on each others shoulders. Of course sometimes, as in the photo above, the bull has other ideas and goes for the pole people, here knocking the one at the bottom to the ground and the others just obey the law of gravity and fall down.

The bulls have their horns sawn so they are blunted, taped, and, usually, are at the end of a very long tether. However quite often they get loose from the tether. And a blow from the side of a horn can be very nasty.

And if a bull sits on someone, as one did, it can absolutely ruin the crease in your trousers.

Unlike a bull fight at the end of the contest the bulls are put back in the truck in which they turned up, fairly irritated but otherwise not too bothered by the whole thing.

And all this before lunch!

PS You might notice that participants are not wearing goggles, high visibility jackets, helmets or any other form of safety clothing. And of course no sensible footwear. And people wonder why I prefer life here to the Nanny State that is UK?
